Subject: Lack of parking in and around CCNY.
Date: October 24, 2018
The purpose of this memo is to express the concern with the lack of parking provided by the school. This is a huge problem on campus, not only noticed by myself also by many students attending CCNY.
Summary
Grove Engineering School is a top choice in New York City, because of its amazing engineering program. For many of us CCNY is an hour or more commute. Public transportation seems to be the most convenient means of getting to and from school. Many of us own vehicles and would like to drive to school, but refuse to due to the limited parking on or around campus.
Discussion
CCNY is an outstanding school, it was first on my list for transfer schools. I had my mind set on an engineering degree from CCNY Grove Engineering school, but had second thoughts because of the long commute and limited parking. I now attend CCNY, and I am already overwhelmed with stress from finding parking and making it to class without being late. Over the years the MTA prices have spiked with no improvements in services. This is our only other means of getting to and form school, at times this can be very frustrating with delays.
CCNY offers parking for student in various ways, which is a slight fix to the problem but this still does not make up for the countless amount of students left out because of the first come first serve policy.
With the limited parking options students waste time that could be going towards studying or other productive academic activities.
Students are advised to show up early and scan the surrounding area for parking. This is inconvenient and not a real solution to the problem. The Campus covers a large area, some of the empty spaces can be used for student parking. While scouring the area for parking I noticed a huge empty grass field behind the Bernard and Anne Spitzer SOA building, CCNY can used that space for a parking lot. St Nicholas Terrace is available for faculty parking, I would like for CCNY to extend that to students and faculty, instead of limiting it to faculty. Also having students pay for parking can be inconvenient for students who are not finically stable, we should do away with paid parking. Parking should be offered once your tuition is paid. CCNY should use every unoccupied 9×18 space to make an available parking lot for students.
Recommendation
I would like to schedule a in person meeting at a convenient time to further express my concern with the current parking situation, and to provide constructive solutions.
